Mama Jollene’s Strength and Her Child’s Journey to Healing

Recently, we met Mama Jollene, whose child received heart treatment in 2021 during the COVID-19 pandemic. Her story is inspiring because she faced many challenges but never lost hope that her child could be treated and healed.

Her husband passed away a few months after Jollene was born, and before she could recover from the pain of losing him, she had to care for her sick child. Jollene was diagnosed with a serious heart condition that required urgent medical attention.

Mama Jollene brought her child for a heart screening at our medical camp at Benjamin Mkapa Hospital in Dodoma in 2021. The doctors confirmed that Jollene’s condition was severe and that she needed treatment abroad.

At times, she felt hopeless and was discouraged by people who told her that her child would not survive. This brought her a lot of stress and heartbreak. However, she refused to give up. She sought confirmation from doctors about whether her child’s condition could be treated and worked tirelessly to find support.

Her efforts paid off, and she finally took Jollene to Narayana Hospital in Bangalore, India, for heart surgery. This was during the COVID-19 pandemic, when traveling was risky due to health concerns.

Jollene’s heart surgery was successful, though it took a long time for her to recover due to the complexity of the procedure.

Today, Jollene is entirely healthy and full of life. Sometimes, she tells her mother, “I have half a heart,” meaning that doctors removed part of her heart during the surgery.
