When Love Travels Far Enough to Heal a Tiny Heart

Melissa and her husband travelled this January from the USA to Tanzania to celebrate their love. Like many couples on their honeymoon, they were looking for beautiful places and memories they would carry with them for a lifetime.

What they did not know at the time was that this journey, so personal and joyful for them, would also help change a child’s life.

Through a friend’s recommendation, they chose to travel with One Heart Travel Limited. From the moment they arrived, everything was thoughtfully organized. Airport transfers, local tours and excursions were handled with care, allowing them to focus fully on enjoying the experience.

Behind this seamless travel experience lies a deeper reality.

In many parts of Tanzania, children born with heart conditions face overwhelming barriers: limited access to diagnosis, high treatment costs and long waiting times. These challenges place a heavy burden on families and on an already stretched public health system.

The One New Heart Tanzania was founded to respond to this reality by providing free heart diagnosis and treatment to children in need. However, like many non-profits operating in low- and middle-income countries, long-term financial sustainability remained a major challenge.
This challenge inspired an innovative solution.

Through One Heart Travel Limited, a social enterprise tourism company, the organization began leveraging Tanzania’s thriving tourism sector to finance children’s heart care. The model is simple yet powerful: 50% of all profits from travel experiences are reinvested directly into heart treatment for children in need.

The honeymoon journey of Melissa Horenstein and her husband, which took them across Arusha and Zanzibar, was deeply personal and memorable. At the same time, it contributed to funding life-saving heart care for a child they may never meet, but whose life is forever changed by this model.

This approach demonstrates how tourism can:
•  Reduce the burden on government health services
•  Protect families from catastrophic health expenses
•  Create dignified employment within local communities
•  Transform travelers into partners in global health equity

As The One New Heart Tanzania continues to innovate sustainable ways to support children’s heart care, partnerships with travelers, tourism agencies and global health advocates remain essential.

Together, we can ensure that children born with heart conditions grow up healthy, pursue their dreams and reach their full potential.
