Jackrine’s Journey to Healing: A Story of Determination, Hope and Community Support

Jackrine was born on March 30, 2016, at Chimala Mission Hospital in the Mbarali District of Mbeya. As the third child in a family of five, she grew up in Kibaoni village, Ihahi Ward, where both her parents, Mr. Wilbert John Kiyombo and Lea Yoel Mbongo, work as small-scale farmers.

Early Signs of Illness

Shortly after birth, Jackrine began experiencing persistent fevers and coughs. Despite multiple visits to Chimala Hospital, no underlying condition was detected. For years, her symptoms continued without clear answers.

It wasn’t until she turned five that doctors at Mbeya Referral Hospital finally discovered the cause: Jackrine had a hole in her heart, a condition that required specialized treatment.

A Life-Changing Encounter

In March 2024, Jackrine attended a free heart screening camp organized by The One New Heart Tanzania. Between March 13 and 15, more than 300 children were screened, and it was during this event that doctors confirmed the severity of her heart defect. They recommended surgery to close the hole and restore her health.

The Journey Toward Treatment

The first plan was to send Jackrine to the United States for surgery at Children’s Memorial Hermann through a sponsorship. However, she and her father were unable to secure U.S. visas, halting the plan.

A second opportunity arose through a heart surgery camp in Kenya organized by Care for a Child’s Heart. Unfortunately, due to family challenges, this plan fell through as well.

Healing at JKCI

Despite the setbacks, hope was restored when arrangements were made for Jackrine to receive treatment locally. On March 6, 2025, she underwent a PDA Device Closure procedure at Jakaya Kikwete Cardiac Institute (JKCI). The procedure was successful, marking a turning point in her health and future.
